DLD Day

On Friday 20th October, we celebrated ‘DLD day’. DLD stands for Developmental Language Disorder and it something that our SENCo, Mrs Little feels very passionately about and she often speaks about it at conferences.  The teachers had ‘facts on snacks’ in the staffrooms whilst the children learned about DLD and completed tasks, including giving the teachers feedback!

Five facts about DLD:

1. DLD is a hidden disability and not obvious by looking at someone.
2. DLD starts in early childhood but is a lifelong condition.
3. DLD is as common as other more well-known conditions such as Autism and ADHD.
4. Approximately 2 children in every classroom will have DLD.
5. People with DLD have difficulties talking and understanding language.

Five ways you can help:

1. Get the person’s attention before speaking to them.
2. Make sure instructions are clear, simple and given in order.
3. Allow for extra thinking and processing time.
4. Use visuals, pictures and symbols to support the spoken word.
5. Check for understanding and try not to get cross if they find things difficult.
